The Office of Legal, Legislative and External Affairs is comprised of the following program areas:
The Office of Legal Services provides a variety of legal services to the regulatory unit of the Department of Insurance. The office represents the Department before state and federal courts and other administrative tribunals, drafts legal documents, and advises other program areas of the Department of Insurance on legal issues which arise in the course of their work. The office also initiates enforcement or administrative disciplinary action against Department licensees and those entities engaging in the unauthorized transaction of insurance business. Legal Services does not provide legal services to the general public, licensees or other agencies.
Investigations is a unit of the Office of Legal Services responsible for investigating alleged violations of the insurance laws in order to protect South Carolina's consumers. Based on the results of the investigation, administrative action including, but not limited to, fines, license suspension / revocation and restitution may be initiated.
The Office of Legislative Affairs serves as primary liaison between the department and members of the South Carolina General Assembly and their staffs. The office responds to inquiries from members of the General Assembly; notified the General Assembly about Department initiatives, policies, and programs; and keeps other governmental bodies informed concerning insurance regulatory measures that affect their operations. The office also assists constituents with insurance relation questions.
The Office of External Affairs is responsible for all public outreach and education and services as the department's primary liaison with members of the media. All requests from the media, for public education and other information are coordinated and managed by this office.
