Licensing  

Unlimited Lines Resident Producer 

I. If the applicant has previously been convicted of a crime, either a misdemeanor or a
   felony, the following documentation needs to be submitted to the Department.

1. Application for Individual License, Form 3506 [pdf 203k]
    
2. License fee of $20
   The fee is not pro-rated and is non-refundable and non-transferable.
    
3. SLED Report

• If the applicant is cleared for licensure, the South Carolina Department of Insurance will notify the applicant by letter. Once the applicant receives the Department's letter, the applicant can proceed with the 40-hour pre-licensing education and examination. 

II.   If the applicant has not previously been convicted of a crime, either a misdemeanor
      or felony, the following documentation needs to be submitted to the South Carolina
      Department of Insurance using our online service or by US mail.  If submitting by
      US mail, the items below must be included and submitted as a complete package to 
      the Department.

1. Application for Individual License, Form 3506 [pdf 203k]
     
2. License fee of $20
   The fee is not pro-rated and is non-refundable and non-transferable.
    
3. SLED Report
    
4. Exam Report from Prometric 
   The exam report expires 24 months after the date of issuance.
    
   Contact Prometric directly at 800-490-6548 to register for the state licensing examination.
    
5. 40-hour Pre-Licensing Certificate, Form 3536  [pdf 411k]
    
6. Proof of Series 6 or 7
   Proof of Series 6 or 7 must be provided if the applicant is applying for variable contracts.  A copy of the NASD Central Registration Directory (CRD) "print screen" showing passage of the appropriate exam is acceptable.  The applicant's CRD number must be on the application.

• If the applicant was previously licensed as a resident producer in another state and is applying for a South Carolina resident license, items 1-3 from above and a letter of clearance are required.

Unlimited Lines Non-Resident Producer

The applicant must submit the following documentation to the South Carolina Department of Insurance.

1. Application for Individual License, Form 3506 [pdf 203k]
    
2. License fee of $20
   The fee is not pro-rated and is non-refundable and non-transferable.
    
3. Home State Certification
   If license status cannot be verified on the National Insurance Producer Database (PDB), certification from the applicant's home state will be required.
    
4. Proof of Series 6 or 7
   If the applicant is applying for variable contracts, their NASD Central Registration Directory (CRD) number must be on the application.

Limited Lines Resident Producer

The sponsoring insurer must submit the following original documentation to the South Carolina Department of Insurance.

Limited Lines Non-Resident Producer

Appointments

Requirements

The insurer must submit appointments electronically through the National Insurance Producer Registry (PDB).  If the sponsoring insurer is unable to appoint electronically, the sponsoring insurer must submit the following original documentation to the Department.  This is required for both new and amended appointments.

License, Appointment and Renewal Fees

The renewal date for Unlimited Lines Producer appointments and Limited Lines Producer licenses and appointments is September 1 of even-numbered years. The renewal fee is the same as the appointment fee.

Cancellation

The insurer must cancel appointments electronically through the National Insurance Producer Registry (PDB).  If the insurer is unable to cancel electronically, the insurer must submit to the Department an original South Carolina Appointment/Termination Form, Form 3505 [257k].
